About
the ASSA Symposium
|
|||
The theme
of the Symposium is Serious Amateur Astronomy: Linking with Professionals. Amateurs the world over are in the process of embracing a new era in amateur
astronomy. New technologies, low cost quality instruments, a revolution
in global communication as well as an increase in public awareness in
astronomy are opening doors for the amateur like no other time in the
past. The Symposium aims to expose participants in a practical manner
to a selection of current topics in amateur astronomy and equip them for
the changing environment. A focus on the popularization of astronomy is
also seen as a key element where amateurs can make valuable contributions.
Professional astronomers will share their thoughts on "pro-am collaboration"
and expert amateurs will discuss and demonstrate their knowledge to participants. A special
visit to the historic Lamont-Hussey
Observatory on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein will take place the Saturday morning. Key note speakers for the Symposium include Tim Cooper (ASSA), Prof. Phil Charles
(SAAO), Dr. Patrick Seitzer (University of
Michigan) and Prof. David Block. Other speakers include leading local professional and amateur astronomers. A tour of the Boyden facilities and sky gazing is on the agenda.
A special dinner event at a nearby lodge is scheduled for the Friday evening, to in part commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Friends of Boyden.
Various other presentations and demonstrations will form part of the program. If you
feel you can contribute to the theme of the Symposium or present talks
you can contact the organising committee (see address below). Your
input and ideas will be welcomed. Download the application form and fax/e-mail
it to the organisers. |
