LAMONT-HUSSEY OBSERVATORY
BLOEMFONTEIN, SOUTH AFRICA
1928 - 1974
by Dawie Van Jaarsveldt
The sun smiles by himself
as he says goodnight,
again, the ball in the sky
will be beautiful tonight.
Slowly they appear,
millions, side by side,
holding hands like lovers,
celestial music their guide.
Oh look! Oh look!
Oh look how each pair
is dancing like petals
in the quiet spring air!
Oh look! Oh look!
Oh look how fair,
the waltzes of romance
of the fires in the air!
How you make me smile
southern sky, southern sky,
I follow your children,
I see them fly.
Through the valleys of the Cosmos
where they kiss so dear,
I love them, I name them,
that is why I am here.
Oh no! Oh no!
Where are they tonight?
Is the ball all over,
or have I lost my sight?
Oh no! Oh no!
Where are you southern sky?
Could darkness be this dark
or is this how I die?
Are they still there,
do they still care?
Do they still dance
like kites through the air?
When you see them in the heavens
in their glorious flight,
ask God for an angel
to visit me tonight.
To bring me together,
to point me on high,
to find one more waltz,
before they fall from the sky.
