Pathways and Nature - Boyden Observatory

Clear paths take visitors to the various facilities on the premises. The natural "veld" setting and wild plant life on the hill gives visitors the feeling of being far removed from the hustle of urban life, even though they are close to world class astronomical instruments. The peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery over the Free State "koppies" and flatlands make an impression which is not soon forgotten.

An educational walk is being constructed at Boyden, where visitors can take in the splendour of the diversity of plant, animal, insect and bird life. Also on the path will be references to other sciences, including biology, geology etc. The educational walk is partly funded by donations from the Charl van der Merwe Foundation.

Sunsets - Boyden Observatory

A visit to Boyden can potentially afford you some of the best views of the Free State sunsets in the region, due to unbounded horizon views. The best time for beautiful sunsets is during the summer rain season (November-February) when huge clouds envelope the whole province. Below are some of the sunsets photographed from Boyden in the past.
